At Alpha Farm, we depend on people who are:
We are a working farm that supports an average of 15 to 20 people. Because Alpha has several income producing businesses and a number of ongoing projects, flexibility and willingness to work in diverse areas are a must as we occasionally find ourselves shorthanded.
The farm is looking for conscientious, responsible people with an interest in community. Good communication and interpersonal skills are a must. Internships are voluntary; we don't pay wages or charge a fee. But we do provide room, board, basic needs, and a small monthly allowance. Interns make a three- to six-month commitment, working three days a week in their area of concentration and two more days in other community work. At the end of the internship, interns may apply to renew their internship commitment or may apply for residency to pursue long-term community membership.
Garden intern
Our two-acre garden helps feed a community averaging about 20 people. We aim to grow abundant vegetables and some berries while honoring all things great and small. When we center ourselves and listen, the earth speaks. Learning to follow its leadings is a part of living rightly and creates a harmonious and fruitful garden.
No previous garden experience is necessary, but hands-on experience, especially in water systems and irrigation, is helpful. Interns need to be willing to do mild to intensive manual labor, honor all living things, have an open heart and mind, and listen and learn from the earth and the other gardeners. Because our garden is at present not a commercial one, garden interns must be willing to work at income-producing work in the community two days a week.
Small Business Intern Alpha Institute consensus and facilitation
Through Alpha Institute, two Alpha members practice and teach Quaker-based consensus decision making. In doing so, we share what we have learned in community and give groups practical tools for putting a philosophy of cooperation, spiritual openness and human potential into practice by working together.
Alpha Institute needs a person with strong oral and written language skills and computer skills who is good with detail and well organized, to provide office support for our consulting practice. The intern will attend and assist with training in consensus and meeting facilitation as well as participating in the day-to-day meeting life of Alpha Farm, where we practice consensus decision making. A six-month commitment is preferred.
Small Business Intern Alpha-Bit Cafe, bookstore and gift shop
Since 1972, Alpha-Bit has taken a bit of Alpha Farm into the world, providing an oasis of calm, beauty and open-hearted service in Mapleton, a town of about 1200 people along the route from Eugene to the coast at Florence. Our clientele is about 1/3 each locals; people traveling between the Eugene-Springfield area and the coast; and tourists from farther away, especially in summer.
Prospective interns should be outgoing, self-directed and detail-oriented. Interns will learn all aspects of our small retail business, including customer service, food preparation, purchasing and merchandising.
To apply for an internship
Call and ask for "the troll," our visitor coordinator, to schedule a visit. Let them know which internship you are interested in, and seek out the program coordinator for that internship during your visit. You will complete an application and interview with the program coordinators as your visit progresses.
If you are unable to travel in advance of the internship, call and ask to speak with the program coordinator. She can mail you an application and interview you by phone.
