CrabLg w2.jpg

Crabbing is among the best in the state, and the bay also offers excellent salmon fishing and clamming.  Public docks for crabbing, fishing, and moorage, a launch ramp, day use park and picnic area, are among the facilities available in the Port area.  Many private marinas along the river provide similar services.

A license for crabbing and clamming will be required, effective January 1, 2004.

Anglers should check the
Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife regulations for current license requirements, limits and species identification.

Crabbing is easy, fun, and often rewarding!

For Dungeness Crab:
   3 rings only per person
   5-3/4" minimum size limit
   Males only
12 crab per person per day catch limit

Alsea Bay has no maintained channel or jetties to provide safe navigation to or from the ocean.  Dangerous conditions exist at the mouth of the Alsea on ebb tides. Click here for detailed

Fishing: Clear skies and cooling temperatures bring the famous fall run of Chinook salmon to the Alsea River. Fishing techniques include trolling in the lower bay, bobber fishing up the river, lure and fly fishing.

During the winter months, anglers float the upper river in drift boats searching for winter steelhead. Spring brings seasonal runs of perch and herring to the bay, and makes fishing from a dock or a boat fun for the whole family.

OREGON COAST COHO SALMON ARE CURRENTLY LISTED AS A THREATENED SPECIES AND ANY TAKE OF THIS SPECIES IS PROHIBITED. See the difference between Coho and Chinook salmon.

For more information check with the National Marine Fisheries Service.
