Class Policy on Plagiarism
The plagiarism policy in this class is the same as in virtually every other class. It is a simple policy. It goes like this:Plagiarism will not be tolerated.
That means that no written material longer than four or five consecutive words (sometimes less) may be copied from another source without both a) putting quotation marks around the quoted material and b) providing a full citation crediting the source. Citations should include the author, title, date and publication information regarding the source, and the exact pages on which the quotation can be found. The citation should be clear enough so that a reader could go to the exact page and find that quotation in its original source to check the quote's accuracy and to see the context in which it appears.
If an assignment (this includes study questions, research projects, discussion questions, online exams, or any other assignment) contains any plagiarized material - whether that material is taken from books, from the internet, or from another student - that assignment will receive a failing grade, and the student will receive a warning.
If such plagiarism occurs more than once in the course, the student will receive a failing grade for the course.
Just one footnote here for your information:
Instructors are able to run plagiarism scans on any student papers they've received of which they may be suspicious. The scan programs - there are several available - search through the entire internet, web, and all online resources to see if there are any matches for plagiarized sentences, phrases, or paragraphs in that paper anywhere on the internet. If there are, the programs report back to the instructor where the matches for those sentences or paragraphs can be found.
