Discussion Questions for
Week Two of

William James' Varieties of Religious Experience

  1. Of the two forms of religious temperament, the "Healthy-Minded" and the "Sick Soul," which do you think James seems to personally have the more sympathy with? That is, which of the two do you think he personally favors?
  2. Which of those two do you think James believes is more in touch with the fullness of reality?
  3. In the last paragraph of Lectures VI-VII James says "The completest religions would therefore seem to be those in which the pessimistic elements are best developed." What reasons do you think he has for saying that?
  4. How did you personally feel about this book and the ideas in it?
